About Today: 2012 Movie and TV Preview

How does Hollywood plan to rebound from last year's theater attendance numbers, the lowest in 16 years? For starters, Tom Cruise plays a long-haired '80s rock star in Rock of Ages, Nicholas Cage stars as a monster with a flaming skull in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and Keanu Reeves hunts an evil samurai overlord in Ronin 47. We're still trying to confirm whether these are comedies or dramas.

Most Anticipated Films of 2012
Franchise-crazy Hollywood is at it again. Many of this year's most-anticipated films are either new entries in popular franchises (The Dark Knight Rises, The Bourne Legacy, Skyfall) or the first film of what could or will be a series (The Hunger Games, The Avengers).

2012 Action Movie Preview
Arnold Schwarzenegger makes his post-gubernatorial return to the big screen in August's The Expendables 2--and I'll be shocked if one of his first lines in the film isn't "I'm back."

2012 Horror Film Preview
I still consider Rob Zombie's warped 2003 directorial debut House of 1000 Corpses the most nightmare-inducing film I've ever seen. Will he rekindle his penchant for chilling terror in this year's The Lords of Salem?

Preview of New Midseason TV Comedies
Though it received a somewhat tepid response during its run in the UK on BBC, I'm still hopeful that Life's Too Short, a new HBO mockumentary from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, will compare favorably to their previous (and brilliant) collaborations on The Office and Extras.

Despite what the infomercials may claim, losing weight is hard work. There is no magic pill or vibrating belt that blasts away the pounds, sadly. What does work: Having a strong network of support. Count us amongst your support network--you can do it!

How to Lose Weight
As our Guide to Exercise says, losing weight essentially boils down to burning more calories than you consume. Of course, if it were that easy none of us would be sitting here resolving to lose a few pounds this year.

Set Your Weight Loss Goals
So you want to lose 15 pounds this year. Have you asked yourself why? Perhaps it's better to focus more on smaller, more attainable goals that add up during the year. Doesn't "lose 1 or 2 pounds every month" sound so much easier?

Stop Fearing Fat in Your Food
If you've tried losing weight while eating a lot of "low-fat" foods, it may be time to radically rethink your diet. Adding in healthy sources of fat -- including, even, red meat -- may be what it takes to help you feel full faster, and find a healthy weight.

About Today: Get Your Finances in Order

Last year I resolved to (finally) pay off my student loans. Success! Woo hoo! What's on my financial resolutions list in 2012? Better budgeting, reducing credit card debt, saving for retirement, and paying my taxes early.

Create a Budget--and Stick to It
Firm budgets are a gateway to financial stability, in large part because they help keep superfluous spending in check. They're fairly easy to put together, too, but here's the not-so-secret catch: creating a budget and sticking to a budget are two entirely different beasts.

Reduce (or Eliminate) Your Debt
I think we can all agree that crazy-insane interest rates on borrowed money are the pits. I think we also know there's only one proven way to avoid those rates: paying off the debt.

Allocate More Savings for Retirement
Last night I was visited by a despondent Future Me, who begged and pleaded with me to stop putting retirement planning on the backburner. If I didn't start saving this year, he threatened a visit from Teenager Me as revenge. Oh, the horror! I'll save, I'll save!

Beat the Annual Taxes Deadline
Remember that episode of The Simpsons where Homer, scrambling to beat the tax-filing deadline, bundles up his hastily filled out forms in a football-sized wad and tosses 'em in at the last second? He was (obviously) audited that year. Moral: don't pull a Homer Simpson.
